Our People

Paul Smith MBA, FCMI, FInstLM - Managing Director

When it comes to understanding how legal compliance can best fit within a business environment, Paul's extensive experience is invaluable.

After successfully implementing turnaround strategies in a number of Safeway superstores, and then piloting a number of wide ranging initiatives in one of the companies flagship stores, Paul was hand-picked to champion head office based roles to reduce the burden on bureaucracy. After banking annualised cost savings and efficiency improvements in excess of £10 million, and helping in a wide range of business development initiatives, Paul and his wife Sue set up Due Diligence Solutions in 2003. They were then joined shortly afterwards by fellow directors.

Paul's business acumen and credentials are second to none, having achieved an MBA in 2006, and more recently he received the highest accolades from both the Chartered Management Institute, and Institute of Leadership and Management when he was granted fellowship status.

"When it comes down to legal compliance in any organisation, the fundamental requirements for success are teamwork and keeping things simple. Our ability to recognise that no two organisations are the same, and deliver solutions in a highly cost effective way, really underlines the reason why so many of our customers love working with us," said Paul.

Sue Smith - Director and Co-Owner

Sue really has cut her teeth on the sharp end of business, and has considerable experience at dealing with the nastiest of situations, those we all really hope we never have the misfortune to be in.

After 10 years in store and area management roles, Sue went on to operate the SOS (Serious or Sensitive) out of hours hotline covering all of the Safeway store portfolio for over 8 years, Sue moved on to provide support and advice following all Government Inspector Visits for two years, prior to setting up Due Diligence Solutions.

Glyn Scott MTSI, DMS - Trading Law Director

Glyn is a qualified Trading Standards Officer and spent a number of years in local authority enforcement, before moving to the retail sector as Trading Standards Controller for Safeway. He has vast experience of the development and defence of diligence systems and has unrivalled expertise in dealing with enforcement challenges from all manner of authorities, including both central and local government. Underage sales is another specialist area for Glyn.

Chris Thompson - IT Director

Before joining Due Diligence Solutions in 2005, Chris worked in the retail industry for over 20 years, and before leaving Safeway designed and implemented due diligence IT systems providing cost savings to the business of over £8 million. As well as implementing our in-house IT systems, Chris has been instrumental in the design of our Pyramid® online risk management system, and more recently a facilities management system.

Mitch Perry GradIFireE, MIFSM, MIAAI-UK - Senior Fire Safety & Fire Investigation Consultant

With over 30 years service with the Local Authority Fire Service in Surrey, Mitch is vastly experienced. After retiring from duty, he started his own company in 2005 and specialised in fire risk assessments, on all types of properties, as well as fire investigation work. After being an associate with ourselves for a number of years, Mitch eventually became a full-time member of staff in 2008. Mitch has, this year, also been included on the Institute of Fire Safety Managers Register of Assessors.

Alan Astbury MSc, BSc(Hons), MCIEH, CMIOSH - Senior Health & Safety Consultant

Alan is both a Chartered Environmental Health Practitioner and a Chartered Member of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health. His 25 years experience in the health & safety field has enabled him to develop a proven track record of creating straightforward processes that help to support businesses with health & safety compliance, rather than creating administrative burdens.

Peter Ludford MBA, MSc, MIFireE, MIRM, MBCI - Fire Safety Consultant

Peter's expertise in fire safety management and emergency planning has been garnered from 30 years experience across three separate fire and rescue services. In the latter part of his career he was responsible for developing the service's response to the requirements of the Civil Contingencies Act and putting in place its business continuity planning framework. Peter gained an MBA from Kingston Business School, holds an MSc in Fire Command and Management, and is a Corporate Member of the Institution of Fire Engineers. His particular area of expertise is the application of British Standard 25999 for business continuity planning.

Jamie Reid - Business Development Manager

Jamie joined Due Diligence Solutions in a business development role to help the company with its planned growth. Jamie's area of expertise is journalism and his keen eye for detail, coupled with highly effective personal skills, has quickly helped him to settle in to his new and diverse role. Jamie has past experience of working for the BBC and Gillingham Football Club. Besides his work with Due Diligence Solutions, he is also a media consultant for Kent County Cricket Club.

John D'Olivera - Accounts Team Executive

John is arguably the most popular man in the office because he makes sure that everyone gets paid, including staff! He has an extensive knowledge of accountancy, having been in the business for all his working life. John worked for Sainsbury's, as an Information Manager at head office, for more than 20 years before joining Due Diligence Solutions in 2006. Based at company headquarters every day, John is the company book-keeper and controls all aspects of finance.

Kayleigh Fosbraey - Administration Team Executive

Kayleigh joined the company in October 2008 to add depth to the administration team. She comes from an accounting and administration background, previously working for the Letting Centre in Sittingbourne as a Trainee Lettings Negotiator. Kayleigh works at company headquarters every day and is a keen communicator. Outside of work she enjoys socialising with friends and is a Scout leader.
